Self-employed Class

This is one of the popular federal programs for people who are self-employed in the cultural or athletics field. Professionals such as authors, journalists, musicians, actors, photographers etc. can apply under this program. Below is a list of eligible occupations considered under this program:

 

  • Librarians

  • Conservators and Curators

  • Archivists

  • Authors and Writers

  • Editors

  • Journalists

  • Professional Occupations in Public Relations and Communications

  • Translators, Terminologists and Interpreters

  • Producers, Directors, Choreographers and Related Occupations

  • Conductors, Composers and Arrangers

  • Musicians and Singers

  • Dancers

  • Actors and Comedians

  • Painters, Sculptors and Other Visual Artists

  • Library and Archive Technicians and Assistants

  • Technical Occupations Related to Museums and Art Galleries

  • Photographers

  • Film and Video Camera Operators

  • Graphic Arts Technicians

  • Broadcast Technicians

  • Audio and Video Recording Technicians

  • Other Technical and Co-ordinating Occupations in Motion Pictures, Broadcasting and the Performing Arts

Requisites for the Self-employed Program:

  • Intention and ability to make a Significant Contribution to Specific Economic Activities

  • Need a minimum of 35 points out of 100 in the scoring grid

  • Minimum experience in cultural activities or athletics which can be 2 one-year periods being self-employed in cultural activities/athletics, or 2 one-year periods participating at a world-class level in cultural activities/athletics, or a combination of a one-year period as self-employed and a one-year period at a world-class level in cultural activities/athletics

  • Must be willing and able to be self-employed in Canada

  • Must have a Bachelor’s/Master’s/Doctorate qualification as applicable to the respective field

  • In the age group of 17-53 years

  • Fluency in English/ French or both

  • Must not be ‘inadmissible’ to Canada

  • Must have Patience – due to longer processing times
