FAMILY SPONSORSHIP

Family Sponsorships

Family sponsorship for Canada is available to Permanent Residents, wherein they can sponsor certain family members to stay, work and study in Canada. Unlike some other nations, a marriage does not guarantee eligibility for Permanent Residency (PR) in Canada. In accordance with section 12(1) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, a foreign national may be selected as a member of the family class on the basis of their relationship as a spouse, common-law partner, parent, child or another specified family member of a Canadian PR or a Canadian citizen.

In family sponsorship for Canada, an adult who is a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada or even a person registered in Canada as an Indian can sponsor their spouse/partner or dependent children to become permanent residents of Canada, subject to certain eligibility criteria applicable as per section 133(1) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations. The first step in family sponsorship for Canada is always to check the eligibility of a sponsor to sponsor his/her family. Unless the sponsor meets all the eligibility requirements, they may not be able to call their family members to Canada.
