Canada–Panama Free Trade Agreement
The Canada-Panama Free Trade Agreement was signed in May 2010 came into effect in April 2013. Canada and Panama had initiated the free trade negotiations in October 2008 and only after several sessions of talks and negotiations, both the countries announced the conclusion of negotiations towards a free trade agreement (FTA) on 11 August, 2009.
This agreement along with the parallel agreements on labour co-operation and environment covers market access for goods, cross-border trade in services, telecommunications, investment, financial services and government procurement procedures. The existing Foreign Investment Protection and Promotion Agreement (FIPA) has been replaced by the investment chapter thus expanding the access for Canadian investors.
